Family Ties

Family Ties explores the dynamics of family gatherings through the lens of my family home. Set during a birthday celebration, the series captures the delicate interplay between festivity and vulnerability. While these occasions are filled with confetti, music, gifts, and cake, I began to notice how we often arrive guarded—reluctant to disrupt the atmosphere with personal worries, perhaps due to our egos.
Through this project, I symbolically release each family member's ego, creating space for deeper connections to emerge. The home itself plays a central role, serving as a place of comfort and reflection. Its pine floors, which have borne witness to both our joyful and most vulnerable moments, become a metaphor for the grounding and unifying power of shared spaces.
Family Ties invites viewers to step into this intimate world, reflecting on the importance of presence and genuine connection in our relationships. Through vibrant acrylic works the series celebrates not just the rituals of birthdays and holidays, but the enduring bonds of family and the role of home in holding us together.
The exhibition took place from October 15 to 21st 2024 at Place Ville-Marie in Montreal, QC

“Put that away, we’re eating soon!”

In this piece, I depict my father. During birthday celebrations, he is always the first to do the grocery run and make sure we have everything needed for the upcoming dinner. Although he helps with chopping ingredients, he somehow always finds a way to slip out and grab himself a little snack—usually something vanilla-flavored, his favorite. He savors every bite, even though he knows a big meal is just around the corner.

"Range ça, on va bientôt manger!"
Dans cette pièce, je représente mon père. Lors des anniversaires, il est toujours le premier à courir au magasin pour s'assurer que nous avons tout ce qu'il faut pour le dîner à venir. Bien qu'il participe à la découpe des ingrédients, il trouve toujours un moyen de s'éclipser pour s'offrir un petit en-cas—généralement quelque chose à la vanille, son parfum préféré. Il savoure chaque bouchée, même en sachant qu'un grand repas l'attend juste après.

This piece portrays my sister, the one we always count on for planning and organizing parties. As the final touches come together and the table is filled with food and drinks, there's a brief moment to pause—answering calls from family sending their best wishes to the birthday star. But soon enough, it’s time to sing the song, and everyone comes together to celebrate!

"CHUUUUUUUT ! On s’apprête à chanter la chanson d’anniversaire !"
Cette œuvre représente ma sœur, celle sur qui nous comptons toujours pour organiser et planifier nos fêtes. Une fois les préparatifs terminés et la table dressée avec de la nourriture et des boissons, il y a un court instant de répit—le temps de répondre aux appels de la famille envoyant leurs vœux à la personne fêtée. Mais très vite, il est temps de chanter la chanson, et tout le monde se réunit pour célébrer !

“Are you finished ? We need your help decorating”

In our family, birthdays come around often — and somehow, I’ve become the go-to person for all the decorating. From the giant number balloons to the sparkly candles, everyone knows I’m the one behind it all. I always try to add a special touch to every setup, making sure everyone gets the same love and attention, no exceptions.
Even if I don’t always have a gift ready, I hope that waking up to a decorated living room brings a bit of magic to whoever’s special day it is. In the end, it’s the little things that make a birthday truly special.

“T’as fini ? On a besoin de ton aide pour les décos !”
Dans notre famille, les anniversaires reviennent souvent — et d’une façon ou d’une autre, je suis devenue la personne incontournable pour toutes les décorations. Des grands ballons en chiffres aux bougies scintillantes, tout le monde sait que c’est moi qui suis derrière tout ça. J’essaie toujours d’ajouter une petite touche spéciale à chaque décoration, en veillant à ce que chacun ait droit au même traitement, sans exception.
Même si je n’ai pas toujours un cadeau prêt, j’espère qu’en se réveillant dans un salon décoré, ça ajoute un peu de magie à la journée de celui ou celle qu’on fête. Après tout, ce sont les petites attentions qui rendent un anniversaire vraiment spécial.

This piece represents my elder brother. After securing the cake, food, utensils, napkins, and decorations, we often find ourselves scrambling at the last minute for the most important thing—candles. Then, once we’ve secured the candles, we stumble upon another issue: Does anyone have a lighter?

“Avons-nous assez de bougies ?”
Ceci est la troisième pièce de la série Liens Familliaux.
Cette œuvre représente mon grand frère. Après avoir sécurisé le gâteau, la nourriture, les ustensiles, les serviettes et les décorations, nous nous retrouvons souvent à la dernière minute à chercher la chose la plus importante : les bougies. Puis, une fois les bougies en main, un autre problème surgit : Quelqu’un a un briquet ?
